Elk Behavior
0001-1986
A high-head threat: This is one of the most descriptive and amazing elk behavior pictures I've made to date. As described in "Elk of North America: Ecology and Management" by Thomas and Toweill: "In approaching an opponent in high-head threat, a cow or bull will retract the upper lip as if exposing rudimentary canines, grind the teeth and utter a soft hissing sound. In full intensity, the nose points almost upward, the eyes roll forward as if to maintain the slit of the pupil horizontally, and the tongue may protrude from the side of the mouth." Other than the nose pointing almost upward, all other aspects of this behavior are shown in this photograph.

Buck and Doe Whitetails

A rutting buck whitetail deer tends a doe in estrus during a light snow flurry. This unusually big buck will probably take on all challengers to defend his opportunity to mate with a receptive doe. Resulting from a past fight, this buck has a minor injury to his eye.

Buck Tending Doe
0001-1896
This big rutting buck is approaching a receptive doe and "foot stomping". Based on what I've seen, this foot stomping behavior appears to intimidate the doe, and she often urinates, which allows the buck to check her receptiveness (by scent). It has also been said that foot stomping releases scent clues from the inter-digital glands located between the toes of deer.
