This herring gull, just a few hours old, nestles next to a hatching egg. Semi-precocous, this chick will leave the nest in its first few hours but remain in the area for a few weeks while being tended by its parents.

Like many young animals this herring gull has frozen as a predator avoidance measure. Though it is easily located by the human eye, the eyes of predators rely more on movement to locate prey. That, combined with the screaming, dive-bombing behavior of protective adults, assures survival of adequate numbers of young to sustain the population.
